Have to call that a success.  Great turnout to hear this important message.  Even had an overflow classroom for simulcast.  Hi Tech.
Thanks to the wonderful tech guys and their determination to get it just right.  Pleased that we've made another connection, beyond scholarship with higher learning and the people within it.  Was a pleasure to work with Dr. Barb Perry.  She is such an expert in her field and we're lucky to know her.

Thanks also to Melanie who coordinated the look and feel of the evening, and made sure we had coffee, tea and goodies.  And oh yes, thanks for dinner.
Hat's off to Marianne for publicity and creativity.
More people need to see this.  It's hard to watch and not squeeze back a tear.
How can women and girls be so devalued?  I may have to boycott those countries.  If I'm not valued, then they won't get my travel money.

April Meeting

This past Wednesday we marked the passing of our dear friend Sybil Stirling.  Members Betty, Lynn, Karen and Dorothy who all knew her well shared remembrances of the beautiful person she was, and the many things she did to make a difference in this world.  Bobby and Hedy created a poster board display of her many activities with us, and Kathy arranged for a lovely floral and candle display.  As is customary, our club will make a donation to the Scholarship Fund in her name
.
Our guests for the evening were Jeanette McRae and her team of Camp Quality Puppeteers from Hearth Place.  We viewed two puppet shows which are taken into the schools to raise the awareness of students to how cancer touches the lives of their peers, and how to help them through it.  Their message of understanding and accepting the differences in those around us is transferable beyond the cancer milieu.  The members of the puppet troupe are passionate about what they do, and that was obvious in their presentation.
One interesting side note is that Hearth Place was the inspiration of Carolyn Alexander, a former CFUW member who, after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer, wanted to create a centre that would address the social, practical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of people dealing with all types of cancer and their family members and caregivers.

The many faces of grief

3/16/2013

This past Wednesday at our regular monthly meeting we welcomed Hospice Durham.  The topic centered on dying, something we don't talk about much in our society, yet we are all touched by it.  We learned from our speaker that grieving is a process, not a path, and that although there are identifiable phases, no one person experiences them the same way.  Our personal process is dictated by the circumstances surrounding the death...our relationship to the individual, how that person's life ended, our cultural experience and countless other factors.  No one way of grieving is the right way...there are no shoulds... just your own personal journey, and only you can take it.
On another note, we reviewed resolutions brought forward by other clubs to be discussed and voted upon at the annual national meeting. Under discussion was the Hyper Sexualization of Girls; the need for a Federal Commissioner for Canada's Children; An Adequate income for All Canadians; Bullying and Cyber Bullying; and Reduction of Dietary Sodium (to be discussed next month).  This is an important process as the resolutions which are passed become the focus of our advocacy and lobbying efforts at various levels of government.
Also at this meeting Tuesday, April 16 was announced as the date of the showing of the DVD it's a girl. All members are encouraged to attend, to invite others to join them and to promote this important message.

February Meeting  Raises our Awareness

We enjoyed an energetic presentation by Randie Jacobs of Girls Inc. Durham Region.  Where CFUW works to create scholarships for young women, Girls Inc. is more hands on in developing opportunities for young girls so that they will continue their education.  Their mission is to "empower girls to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. We inspire all girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold through advocacy, education and programs."
They are supported financially by a variety of community sources, but are also open to the same support from interested members of the general public.
As a woman, I applaud their efforts and their success, and recommend that girls and/or their parents explore how participation by

Christmas Dinner 2012

Thirty-four members gathered at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club last evening for our annual Christmas dinner.  It was a lovely way to get into the Christmas spirit with friends, food and carols.

Forgot to post about November.  We enjoyed the hilarity of Dianne Pepper at our November meeting.  She shared some of her career experiences, had us doing some pretty funny things, but most important, we laughed and laughed and laughed some more.  Not too many members left without a smile on their faces.

October's meeting with Susanna Kearsley as guest speaker was well attended and by all accounts enjoyed immensely. The hour spent listening and in conversation wasn't long enough. If you wish to see more of Susanna, she will be at the Whitby Library on November 22nd at 7 p.m. where she will interview Mystery authors Vicki Delany and Elizabeth Duncan.

What a wonderful first meeting this past September 12th.  The turnout was tremendous with lots of new faces and new members.  The room looked lovely thanks to the Social Committee and Marianne who loves to decorate.  The food was also appreciated, and the ice breaker did a marvelous job of getting us all circulating.  I for one am anticipating meeting some interesting new members and getting back into our many scheduled activities.  Well done all who contributed to this successful evening.
