Let's Do Lunch at Mysteriously Yours

12/17/2013

December 13 saw 20 members of the group take the Go Train into Toronto, followed by a subway ride to Mysteriously Yours Dinner Theatre.  There we were treated to a tasty lunch and the crazy antics of the Uptons (think Downton) as we tried to solve the mystery of who MURDERED "ooooooo" Nary.

It was great silly fun and many of the group guessed who the     MURDERER was.  Of course this cannot be revealed here for obvious reasons.

Take a look at the Photo Gallery to see who attended this fun event.

Sleeping Children Around the World

November's general meeting included a presentation by member Karen on the organization near and dear to her heart - Sleeping Children Around the World.  Founded by Murray and Margaret Dryden in 1970, to date $23 million has been raised to provide bed kits for more than 1 million children.

Apart from the benefits to the child, the attractiveness of this program is that all money donated goes directly to funding the kits, and it only take $35.00 to help one child, and by default that child's family.

If you have some particularly difficult people to buy for on your Christmas list, here's a great last minute idea.  Just visit the link to learn more.

Thanks to Karen for bringing this worthy cause to the attention of our membership.

November 25th was the start to the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign. The theme this year is "From Peace at Home to Peace in the World: Let's Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women!"

CFUW National has been writing letters to the Government of Canada on various aspects of violence against women during the campaign.  Following are some highlights with links.

  • CFUW is urging the Government of Canada to implement the recommendations outlined in the International Crisis Group's report "Women and Conflict in Afghanistan" to protect and sustain the gains achieved by and for Afghan women following Canada's withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014.

  • CFUW has also written to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defence to urge the Government of Canada to consider non-violent measures referred to as "unarmed civilian peacekeeping" (UCP) for the protection of women and children located in battle-prone areas of the world, and to incorporate UCP into Canada's national defence strategy.
